At the apex of Zakarum power, the church gathered averitable army of scholars to document the history of the world as they saw it.I have used this seminal work as the bones from which to build my own timeline,correcting errors as well as removing and adding dates (such as in thepre-history below). Dear reader, keep in mind that this is history at thebriefest of glances, a mere tool for understanding whence we have come andwhere the intertwining paths of fate and destiny may lead us in the future.

The following is based on the apocryphal writings ofsages and madmen. After much consideration and scrutiny, I feel this accountrepresents an accurate depiction of the epochs that lay beyond the reach ofmortal memory.

Anu and the Dragon

Before time, before even the universe as we know itexisted, there was only Anu, the One. This single crystalline entityencompassed all things, including good and evil. Longing for a harmony ofessence, it expelled every dissonant and dark aspect of itself. Theseimpurities coalesced into the embodiment of pure evil: Tathamet, theseven-headed dragon.

The blast left behind an eternal scar calledPandemonium. At the center of this otherworldly realm sat the Worldstone, amonolithic crystal said to be the Eye of Anu.

The High Heavens and the Burning Hells

Anu’s fragmented spine careened through the infantuniverse. This remnant of the One became the Crystal Arch, around which theHigh Heavens thrummed into existence. The Arch resonated life itself,conceiving pulses of sentient energies called angels. The manifestations ofAnu’s purest aspects-archangels-formed the Angiris

Council to govern thebrilliant expanses of the Heavens. The members of this ruling body are:

The Eternal Conflict Begins

From the very moment of their existence, the HighHeavens and the Burning Hells clashed in the Eternal Conflict, an apocalypticwas for dominion over all creation. Although the tide of battle ebbed andflowed over the millennia, the war itself was never-ending.

We must understand here that both the High Heavensand the Burning Hells desired complete control of the Worldstone, for it waswith this most miraculous artifact that angels and demons had the power toforge worlds in their image. As such, the majority of the Eternal Conflictraged in the twisted heart of Pandemonium. It is said that ownership of crystalhas changed innumerable times over the eons of battle.

The Creation of Sanctuary

As the eons passed, an angel named Inarius grewdisillusioned with the Eternal Conflict. Indeed, he saw the war itself asunjust. Thus, he gathered like-minded angels and, shockingly, even demons tohis side. Inarius then altered the frequency of the Worldstone, thrusting the crystalinto a parallel reality and shrouding it form the eyes of the Heavens and theHells. There, the renegade angels and demons created Sanctuary, a wondrousparadise world where they could spend eternity in peace.

Birth of the Nephalem

In a most unprecedented act, angels and demonscommingled, siring offspring called the nephalem. Born of light and dark, thesebeings had the potential to become even mightier than their progenitors. Infact, the nephalem were so powerful that Inarius and his comrades feared theymight upset the balance of the Eternal Conflict and wreak havoc across theuniverse.

在一次史无前例的行为中，天使与恶魔进行了杂交，创造的后代被称之为涅法雷姆。他们生来就混合了光明与黑暗，这些人拥有的潜能比他们祖先还要非凡。事实上，涅法雷姆之强大让伊纳瑞斯和他的同伴们唯恐永恒之战的平衡会被其打破，并肆虐这个宇宙。

So it was that the angels and demons debated thefate of their beloved children. Some of them (at one time, even Inarius)considered exterminating the nephalem.

The Purge

Inarius’s mate, the demoness Lilith, grew horrifiedat the thought of losing her offspring. In a fit of ruthless fury, she hunteddown the other renegades and slaughtered them one by one. Only Inarius and thenephalem were spared from her fearsome wrath.

Shocked by Lilith’s deeds, Inarius banished her fromSanctuary. He could not, however, bring himself to harm the innocent nephalem.He attuned the Worldstone so that it would cause their powers to diminish overtime. According to legend, Inarius then disappeared into the wilds of Sanctuaryand was not seen again for millennia.

An unknown span of time passed after this series ofevents. We can assume generations of nephalem lived and died. With their powersdampened and their life spans decreased, they became mortals, completely ignorantof their incredible heritage.
